MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PRODUCT SERVICES AND EXPERIENCE
Phil has been innovating in the field of user experience for almost two decades. His visual mind and depth of expertise in the science of human performance provided the perfect launching point for a successful career in user interface research and design.
An innovator and pioneer, Phil is focusing on the development of a framework for measuring and managing UX through an integrated metrics program.
Over the last 16 years Phil has researched, designed and tested over 150 interfaces across multiple industries and domains, including major user experience initiatives for Avery-Dennison, Bloomingdale’s, CapGroup, Citibank, Dell, HP, Macy's, TD Financial Services, Walmart and Wellpoint.
Innovation and method are key to Phil’s unique long-term success. With an innate desire to deliver maximum quality with the path of least action, Phil has been instrumental in experimenting, defining and formalizing user-centered design methodologies that are practical, effective and repeatable in the world of business.
Early in his career, Phil was drawn toward the art and science of user interface design – finding the right balance of aesthetics and performance through the expression of the user interface. Seeking the best in class in terms of process and outcome was a constant driver, and he devoured whatever research, books and articles were available.
Overtime he began to teach interface design and eventually became director of HFI’s professional training development and delivery. “We teach what we do” became the practical seed around which Phil developed HFI’s training program – user-centered analysis, the science and art of Web design, and practical usability testing.
As principal architect of HFI’s certified usability analyst (CUA) program Phil trained 1,000s of practitioners in top companies around the world in all facets of user-centered design methodology. The CUA program remains a reliable credential for practitioners in the field.
Phil is an accomplished author and has taught over 100 courses on user experience worldwide. He earned his PhD, MS and BS from Maharishi International University in Iowa. Additional academic accomplishments include Post-Doctoral Fellow at Medical College of Pennsylvania, Research Faculty at University of Maryland and Post-Doctoral Fellow, NIH Neurological Disease and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland.
